Etna volcano, located on Italy's Sicilian island, reopens
Located on the Italian island of Sicily, the Etna volcano, known as the highest and most active volcano in Europe, was reactivated last night. The explosions began last night and continued into the early hours of the morning. The last major eruption in Etna was in 1992.
A statement from Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Vulcanology (INGV) was issued following the reactivation of the Etna volcano on the island of Sicily. The institute said two cracks had formed in the Southeast crater of the volcano, which became active Sunday night, and lava was flowing in a south-southwest direction. Volcanic ash caused by eruptions at the volcano reached some towns around the city of Catania, while the eruptions continued into the morning hours.
